Students will be introduced to the hand building of pinch, coil and slab as well as basic design techniques to create functional and non-functional clay objects. Haystack calculates shop fees at the end of each session to most accurately reflect the amount of supplies used during your workshop. We offer weekend, one-week, two-week, six-week, and eight-week workshops throughout the year. All applications for the summer workshops are submitted online through SlideRoom.
Slip and glazing ideas will be discussed along with loading and firing strategies. While text does refer to written and spoken words, we will also seek to better understand how photographs operate as texts in and of themselves. Specialty classes, such as metals, mixed media, and calligraphy, are also offered. In this week-long workshop, well combine a Japanese technique for making illuminated paper sculpture (Nebuta) with long exposure photography/light painting to recreateor riff off ofa moment from Georges Mlies pioneering classic short film, A Trip to the Moon (Le Voyage dans la Lune). Next we move into Eco-printing, a contact dyeing method which yields imagery of the leaves and their mysterious color pigments onto fabric. In this workshop, participants (principally music/sound artists with some demonstration of existing work and practice) will be offered the chance to stretch themselves as individual and interactive creators. If it becomes necessary for Haystack to cancel a workshop for any reason, students will be notified and a full refund of tuition, room and board will be issued. Students will first design and create bisque molds to create a library of forms to choose from. 
Santa Fe Clay is revered for its annual lineup of summer workshopsone-week ceramic bootcamps that are taught by contemporary ceramic artists like Gene Dodak, Brett Kern, and Jason Walker. Learn to identify, classify, describe, and interpret works of art from a wide range of periods and world cultures. Soft slab construction techniques and simple molds will be used to explore these familiar forms. The Ceramic Studio is downstairs and the Fine Art Studio (also known as Barn Studio) is at the main level.
